Mac OS X Lion vs. Windows 8 Poll Results: Apple will gain ground but Windows will still dominate

Around half of the respondents to our Windows 8 versus OS X lion poll believe that while Apple’s latest installment of the OS X operating system will further its market share, Windows 8 will help Microsoft maintain its grip in the OS market. Second was Windows 8 pushing back OS X’s share while Apple overthrowing Microsoft ranked last in our respondents’ opinion.

Another interesting facet to this rivalry will be in the tablets market. Windows 8 is Microsoft’s reaction to the looming Post-PC era. MS is definitely not new to the tablet form. Windows for Pen Computing, an extension to Windows 3.x that supported styluses, an on-screen keyboard, and handwriting recognition, was marketed as far back as 1991. However it hasn’t had any major successes, at least nothing comparable to the iPad. It is interesting to note the different approaches Microsoft and Apple have on the tablet market and how it will play out. Microsoft regards tablets as PC: they should be able to run like a PC, run a PC operating system and software. Apple on the other hand evolved its mobile operating system and scaled it up to the larger screen.
