Bey2ollak, a free cross-platform mobile app that allows users to share real-time information about Cairo and Alexandria traffic, has amassed 80 thousand users in less than a year since it launched last October.

The application is the brainchild of five cousins, Gamal El-Din Sadek, Mostafa El-Beltagy, Yahya Ismail and Mohamed & Aly Rafea who faced with the daily chore of enduring the city’s traffic, teamed up and decided to create a collaborative platform that allows city dwellers to share real time information about traffic conditions.

“The Concept is Simple, what goes around comes around, we simply do believe in the power of community.”

Bey2ollak is powered by user generated reports that classify the traffic condition on a five level scale ranging from ‘7alawa’ for an enjoyable cruise to the despaired ‘masfeesh amal.’

The name and terms used in the app all come from local dialect.  “It’s a part of the Egyptian culture, and the app is all-Egyptian” explained co founder and developer Gamal El-Din, emphasizing the importance of localization to the success of the app. For instance Bey2ollk introduced the classification “khatar” used to warn users of thugs or riots in response to the civil unrest that accompanied the recent political turmoil in Egypt.

The app also boasts other interesting features such as ‘taree2y’, a feature that allows users to visually isolate their most used routes making easier to navigate instead of looking at congested maps, and ‘el7a2ny’, an in app emergency numbers directory.

The Bey2ollak app is available for Blackberry, iPhone , Android  & Nokia, in addition to a mobile site which makes it accessible to any phone with a browser. The app is currently still in Beta with the full version expected be release by the end of this year.
