Since 2006, the IT and Software sectors have occupied the largest chunk of VC investments in the MENA region at 45%, Media sits joint second with Industrial Manufacturing at 12%, while Telecom ranks 4th with 8%.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE dominate the VC and entrepreneurial landscape in the GCC, constituting the largest and most dynamic economies in the region respectively. With an increasingly entrepreneurship oriented youth, the Levant, a region blessed with a healthy ICT-specialized human capital, is experiencing a growing VC ecosystem with Jordan and Lebanon leading the way. In Egypt, the internet and mobile industries have seen the emergence of many start-ups taking advantage of a large user base to leverage. ArabNet Digital Summit Speakers: Hassan Kabbani, Hatem Dowidar, Ghassan Hasbani & Firas Abi-Nassif

Middle East mobile penetration exceeds that of the United States. Mobile subscriptions in the Middle East are expected to cross the 250-million mark during 2012, with mobile penetration rate reaching 107%, exceeding North America for the first time. Subscriptions will rise further to 352 million by 2017.

Iran continues to be the biggest mobile market in the Middle East with 82.91 million subscriptions. Second is Saudi Arabia with a 50.8 million active subscriptions.

All three of Saudi Arabia’s mobile operators have unveiled LTE services, with Etisalat poised to launch the service in the UAE. LTE subscriptions in the Middle East will number 1.94 million by 2014 and will reach 15 million by 2017.

According to a recent research paper by university professors Noura El Housni, Sakib Ali, and Rafi Ashrafi, the fast growing number of mobile subscribers in the region is expected to support the rise of mobile commerce throughout the region. The study revealed that a five year forecast estimates mobile commerce’s potential reach to be 900 million subscribers in the Middle East by late 2011.

Free & Open to All Coders - ArabNet Announces the Overnight Developers Competition

OVERNIGHT is a competition that aims to test the skills of developers and identify the best engineering talent in the region.  The competition will take place during the Developer Days, part of the ArabNet Digital Summit 2012, from March 27th, at 8PM til 8AM the following day.  Competitors are challenged to build a simple web application or a mobile app in just 12-hours!
